A Brief Study of Noah
Introduction:

Why is it important to study Old Testament Men and Women? (Romans 15:4) "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope."

Why Noah? Because, his faith is spoken of even in the New Testament. (Hebrews 11:7)

"By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith."

I.   Facts of Noah’s life
Noah was the son of Lamech

KJV Genesis 5:28-29
28. And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:
29. And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed.

He lived to be 950 years old/ Six hundred years old when the flood occurred

KJV Genesis 7:6
6. And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

950 at death – 350 after the flood
KJV Genesis 9:28-29
28. And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.
29. And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.

Noah had three sons
KJV Genesis 5:32
And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

II.   The flood / destruction

Why, the wickedness of man was great

KJV Genesis 6:5-7

5. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

6. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

7. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

How Noah was to save his family and himself
KJV Genesis 6:13-22
13. And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
14. Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. (Any other wood would be addition (Revelation 22:18-19) – Just liking adding to any other of God’s commands.
15. And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. A Cubit is 18 inches. Length would have been 450 feet. The width 75 feet. The height 45 feet.
16. A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
17. And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.
18. But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.
19. And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.
20. Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.
21. And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.
22. Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

God decided that 120 years was enough time to complete his commands
KJV Genesis 6:3
And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

III.   The Judgment of that day Compared to the Judgment of our day to come

Genesis 7 begins with God telling Noah 7 days are left then 40 days and nights of rain will come
KJV Genesis 7:4
4. For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.

Eight Souls were saved
KJV Genesis 7:7

  • And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

  •

Few will be saved in the final day
    KJV Matthew 7:13-14
    13. Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
    14. Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Many were "partying and being merry" then the flood came – so shall it be…
    KJV Matthew 24:36-39
    36. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
    37. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
    38. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

  • And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

  •

Many thought they were OK, not worrying. Many in the final day will exceed that by even thinking they are saved
    KJV Matthew 7:21-23
    21. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
    22. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
    23. And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

IV.   The Ark and The Church

The Only Saved People in Noah’s day were in the Ark
    KJV Genesis 8:1

  • And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;

  •

The Only Saved People Now will be in the Church
    KJV Ephesians 5:23

  • For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

  •

Just as Noah had the Only Ark – There is only ONE Church
KJV 1 Corinthians 12:12 (the Body is the Church Colossians 1:18)
For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

Just like there was one door (Genesis 6:16), there is one way in to the Church
    KJV 1 Corinthians 12:13
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

    V.   The Ark and The Plan of Salvation

Folks today want to change the plan of Salvation – they want it to be shorter, less narrow, and for everyone. The Bible gives us a specific plan. One that few will find (Matthew 7:13-14).

    Some stop at faith
    KJV James 2:24-26
    24. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
    25. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
    26. For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

God has given us our 300x50x30. He says he is the ONLY way.
    KJV John 14:6

  • Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

  •

What if Noah would have decided to stop the ark at 50 cubits long – 75 feet?
    KJV Deuteronomy 4:2

  • Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.

  •

There are 5 steps – hearing, then believing, then repenting, then confessing, then being buried in baptism.

    Romans 10:14-17, Luke 13:3, Romans 10:10, and Acts 2:38

What about Baptism? Folks want to change it all day long. Say it is not the point of completion in God’s plan for salvation from alien sinner to Christian.
    KJV 1 Peter 3:20-21
    20. Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

  • The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

  •

What do you want God to say to you in that final day?
